September 2023
It's been three years since the publication of Terry Henderson's memoir, "Brookfield, Home of the Elks".
As with any account of the past, there can be differing interpretations. One unintended oversight was not
identifying Keith Kerr as the Coach of the Elks from 1967-69. Kerr joined the Elks in 1964, their first year
in Senior B, and won the batting title and was named Most Valuable Player at the end of the regular season.
In late 1966, team Manager Don Henderson visited Kerr in his Vice-Principal's office at the local high school,
to ask him to coach the Elks for the '67 season - he agreed. Kerr had recently completed a Master's degree in
Physical Education with majors in administration and coaching.
The Brookfield Elks won Maritime Championships under Kerr in 1967 (Senior B), and in 1968 (Senior A), during
their first year in the premier loop. These achievements were not adequately recognized, however, no disrespect
was intended to the coach and the players on these successful championship teams pictured in the book.
In 1986, the Brookfield Athletic Association celebrated its 50th anniversary of providing sports / athletic / recreation
support at a gala attended by Premier Buchanan. Several Elks, including player/coach Keith Kerr, were presented with
All-Star awards recognizing their outstanding contributions to Elks fastball and hockey teams through the years.
